23 years Rila Monastery Nature Park

The "Rila Monastery" Nature Park was declared in June 2000 with the aim of preserving and maintaining the biological diversity of the ecosystems, as well as objects of inanimate nature of world importance for science and culture. Until then, this territory was within the boundaries of the Rila National Park.

As part of the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula - Rila, the nature park covers the upper reaches of the Rila River and the entire Iliina River, with a total area of 25,253.2 ha, located entirely within the territory of the Rila Municipality.
