NEWS / European Natura 2000 Day – Nature, Spirituality and Responsibility for the Future
On May 21, we celebrate the European Natura 2000 Day – an initiative dedicated to the protection of Europe’s most valuable natural areas. This day reminds us that preserving biodiversity is not an abstract cause, but a daily responsibility toward the places that provide us with life, water, silence and meaning.
Nature Park “Rila Monastery” is part of this pan-European network. The park’s territory protects unique forest ecosystems, rare plant and animal species, high-mountain habitats and natural processes that have survived through centuries thanks to the balanced relationship between people and the mountain. Rila is not just a landscape – it is a living system in which every forest, river and meadow matters.
At the same time, this day carries another important meaning here. Within the boundaries of the park lies the Rila Monastery – a spiritual and cultural landmark with centuries of history, a symbol of Bulgarian identity, faith and heritage. That is why May 21 is felt differently in this place. Today the Orthodox Church honors Saints Constantine and Helena, and this year we also celebrate Ascension Day – a feast associated with hope, ascension and spiritual renewal.
Today is a good moment not only to speak about protected areas and European conservation policies, but also to remember that nature needs more than regulations – it needs care and understanding. What humans can destroy within years, nature creates over centuries.
